What’s a good age to teach your baby to swim?

I heard that they just put the baby in the pool & watch them go. Is 4 & 1/2 months too young? Is that a good way to teach her how to swim or will it just make her afraid of water?

I used to be a swim instructor. 4.5 months is not too young, but this wouldn’t be swim instruction at this point. At her age, it will be a time for the two of you to get familiar with the water. 6 months is typically an age when instruction can begin, as babies start to remember things. Remember, young babies are not able to regulate their body temperature well, so watch her closely for being cold. (indoor pool is about 5-10 min max for most babies)

I had my son in the water right away, but that is just me.

Babies have a natural ability in the water, considering they spent many months in the uterus. After a while they loose that ability, so the sooner they’re in the water, the more likely they are able to retain that natural ability. Don’t expect them to be good swimmers though.

Have fun! Babies in the water are adorable…you’ll be amazed how quickly they adapt and how natural it is to them to be in the water. The parents usually have more problems than the babies do…usually due to unnecessary fear of their baby inhaling water
