When will my 17-month-old begin understanding objects?

She has her own language of da-da and ah-ah and ba-ba. she can make consanant sounds at the begining and end of vowel sounds. i have been trying to teach her the correct words for objects, like “duck” for the rubber ducky in the tub, and she kinda says it, but she doesn’t seem to understand that “duck” is what the object is called. everytime i hand her something, like a sippy cup or toy, i say “cup” or “bear” or whatever the general word for the object is. i repeat it several times. then a few minutes later i say “cup?” or “where’s the cup?” and she will hand me something completely from the other side of the room that doesn’t have a name remotely similar. she isn’t catching on. should i be worried or is she not at the right age to understand? my friend has a 2 year old who can put together a small sentence, like “where is the cup?” or “i have the bear”. i don’t want to compare, but it seems like my daughter has a long way to go to be communicating like that by her birthday.

Every child develops differently, so there are always variations. An 18 month old child should be using about 50 words. BUT, if your daughter isn’t there yet, I wouldn’t worry yet. Between 18 and 24 months, typically developing children go through a rapid language development. They gain about 150 new words, start saying a lot of different sounds, and begin putting 2 words together. I wouldn’t worry about your daughters speech until she is 2. Remember, all children develop differently, and your friend’s child just may be going faster than your daughter, and it is probably fine! You are doing good to label everything and try and get her to.

If you do suspect a problem by age 2, I would ask your Dr. for a referral for early childhood intervention (ECI) speech program. I know in Texas, kids use ECI until they are 3, and then they receive services through the school district. Parents contact our district all the time, and we point them in the right direction.
