Seeking Helpful info on my guppies?
Hello all.
I was wondering you input.
I got 6 guppies for my 10 Gallon fish tank about 7 days ago, i think it was 3 males and 3 females. Although one female died and she was pregnant her fins were nipped at, i don’t know by what, and now i have a nother guppie(brown front & black end covering the anus area) is acting wierd shes/he has no nipped fins from what i can tell but its activeness has dropped quite a bit the past few days she/he is always at the top of the water and acting kinda slugish, it still eats though.
I have not seen any fish lice yet, because the other fish seem to be in one piece
Could you tell me whats worng with her/him?
My guppie colors are.
1: One completely yellow
2: One with blue fins and blueish/yellowish tail fin
3: One spotted with orange fins
4: One blue fins and orange tail fin
5: One brown one the front and black end
6: One Completely Brown and Pregnant (died)
They never tell you this at the pet store and I have the same problem:
You need a ratio of 3 females to 1 male
or else tail biting will ensue and eventually your fish will kill eachother, I imagine your males are displaying and attacking her. I have one female guppy and 3 males, had two females but the other one died already. My female has just had 4 babies (fry), which I keep in a breeding trap to stop them being eaten by the parents or other fish. It’s good to know that fish don’t become inbred so when your females have fry you can put them in the tank with the parents. A female guppy is able to store sperm that can be used to fertilize numerous broods and females are pretty much constantly pregnant when they’re in with males.
The female guppy is drab brown to grey in colour. The somewhat smaller male naturally has a colourful caudal fin (tailfin)
Males have a modified anal fin (the one at the bottom closest to the tail). On males, this comes to a long point but on females is triangular, or fan-shaped
Females also get larger than males, but males generally have larger tails.
You can tell the females by the ‘gravid spot’, a dark spot on the back side of the belly near the anus (this may be red in an albino)
Feeding, guppies love mosquito larve, cucumber, flake food, frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms (nearly all pet stores have these)
